Leveraging Clipboard’s brand and community.

Clipboard is the leading social network platform for the hospitality industry in Australia with a community of over 90,000 members and 9,000 businesses, Clipboard connects the hospitality industry through social, professional networking, and commercial solutions. To enhance the value offered to its community, Clipboard partnered with Mayfly Ventures to launch a Casual Employment Marketplace (CEMP) that links businesses with top contractors in the hospitality sector called Choosey. With features like instant payments, verifications, and job matching, the platform sets a new standard in the gig economy by offering legally compliant, reliable hiring solutions for businesses and contractors alike.

Building for scale and performance on low code

While marketplace startups have an inherent challenge of the cold start problem, Choosey is uniquely positioned to get past this issue and scale in a measured but consistent way by tapping into their existing user base of 100K plus users. From the development perspective the challenge is to build a highly, performant and scalable platform which can handle high volume while keeping costs low through low code. By building efficient database structures, clean workflows and API calls, we have achieved this goal which has been load tested to 1000's of simultaneous users.

Built on Bubble.io, the platform architecture was developed modularly, allowing for easy scaling as the community grows.

Shift tracking and payments complexity made simple

Choosey pays workers the moment they complete their shift. While this provides a lot of value to the worker, the dynamism of this in every day life creates complexity from a development stand point as all edge cases have to be sold. e.g. Worker arrived 20 minutes late to the shift, the cafe is busy and the cafe owners asks the worker to stay back for two hours in the middle of the shit. We built shift tracking and two-click shift updates functionality to make it easy to track and manage on-the-go changes to a shift, suitable for a busy work day. We leverage the deep domain expertise of founder Brendan and Tipu to codify industry pay rates, qualifications, and standards, ensuring legal protection for both workers and businesses. This was essential as it is one of the unique value Choosey aims to bring into the world which cannot be provided by generic gig economy platforms.

Providing personalised recommendations while maintaining user data security

To maximize user engagement, the platform facilitates smart recommendations for jobs and staff which incorporates users preferences and behaviour. Understanding data security is highly valued, we used de-identification protocols to safegaurd user data.

To reduce time to value and increase daily active usage we optimised for quick onboarding, lean shift signup processes, and relevant notifications to drive higher job applications. By incorporating industry-standard qualifications and pay rates, Clipboard provides legally sound employment options that set it apart from generic gig economy platforms. By providing instant payments, we can offer a truly unique experience for hospitality workers which addresses a strongly felt pain point of casual employment workers.
